Setting Sail Into Spring: Community, New Adventures, and Fresh Starts at Thunderbird Sailing Club
April marks the true beginning of sailing season, and at Thunderbird Sailing Club, the energy is unmistakable. From early morning volunteer efforts to new boat ownership stories and upcoming spring events, this month is all about momentum, community, and getting back on the water.
A Community That Shows Up
On the last Saturday of March, something special happened.
Before the official 9:00 a.m. start time, members were already hard at work—cleaning the boathouse, preparing the fleet, and organizing the shared boat program. And they didn’t stop. Volunteers kept arriving all morning, each one contributing time and effort, many even apologizing for being “late.”
But the truth is, showing up at all is what matters.
Thanks to that collective effort, the club is now in incredible shape. The boathouse is cleaner, the boatyard is organized, and even the storage areas are better than they’ve been in years. It’s a powerful reminder of what a dedicated community can accomplish together.
Why Volunteering Feels So Good
There’s an interesting paradox about volunteering: giving your time can actually make you feel like you have more of it.
Beyond that, though, there’s something deeper at play. Volunteering strengthens community bonds. It creates shared purpose. And it brings the simple satisfaction of working side by side toward a common goal.
Because of that spirit, the club is more than ready for the warm season ahead—with a shipshape fleet and an even stronger sense of connection.

Spring Events to Look Forward To
With the season kicking off, April is packed with opportunities to get involved:
- April 15 – First Commodore’s Cup Race
- April 18 (6 PM) – Monthly Meeting & Spring Potluck
- April 26 – Earth Day Celebration
The Spring Potluck is a highlight—bring a dish that celebrates the season and enjoy an evening with fellow members. There will also be an egg hunt for the kids, making it a perfect family-friendly event.
Youth Sailing Opportunities This Summer
Looking ahead, the Lake Thunderbird Educational Foundation is offering summer sailing lessons for young sailors ages 9–16.
These programs focus on:
- Building confidence and teamwork
- Learning water safety and seamanship
- Having fun on the lake—no experience required
Sessions begin in June, with both beginner and intermediate options available. It’s a fantastic way to introduce the next generation to sailing.
A New Boat, A New Adventure
This month also features a story many sailors can relate to: the excitement—and challenge—of buying your first boat.
After spending time sailing on a Hobie Getaway, club member Beau Montgomery knew he’d found the perfect fit: fast, forgiving, and ideal for family fun. After months of searching (and avoiding sun-damaged project boats), he found one through an auction.
And won it.
Of course, that’s when the real journey began.
The Reality of Boat Ownership
From missing parts to paperwork surprises (including no title), the process quickly became a mix of problem-solving and persistence. But step by step, things came together.
There were upgrades:
- Rebuilding the roller furling system
- Cleaning and restoring hardware
- Replacing a worn-out trampoline (after quite literally falling through it)
And there were lessons learned—especially about pacing improvements and focusing on what’s necessary for safe sailing first.
Small Wins, Big Progress
Eventually, the missing gear was recovered, the boat was fully rigged, and everything began to click. With a little help from fellow members, the boat came back to life.
Now, it’s ready for the water—and even part of a growing Hobie fleet at the lake.
And yes, every boat needs a name.

Navigating the “No Title” Problem in Oklahoma
One practical takeaway from this story is that buying a boat without a title isn’t the end of the road.
In Oklahoma, the process includes:
- Getting a notarized bill of sale
- Completing a serial number verification form
- Filing paperwork with the county courthouse
- Paying a filing fee
- Obtaining a court order
- Finalizing registration through Service Oklahoma
It’s a bit of work—but entirely doable.
