March at Thunderbird Sailing Club: Spring Winds, Safety, and a Full Calendar Ahead
Spring is just around the corner at Thunderbird Sailing Club, and March 2026 marks the transition into one of our most active and exciting seasons on the water. From changing weather patterns to club events, racing updates, and learning opportunities, there’s a lot happening at Lake Thunderbird.
A Word from the Commodore: Spring Weather Awareness
As we move out of winter and toward spring, weather conditions can shift rapidly. March is a time when we may experience everything from late-season cold snaps to severe storms and heavy rain—sometimes within the same week or even the same day.
This is a great time to refresh your weather awareness and preparedness. The National Weather Service (NWS) offers an excellent safety hub covering all major weather hazards, including forecasts, watches and warnings, and preparedness guidance. In addition, Ready.gov provides practical information on emergency kits, action plans, and staying informed.
For those interested in going a step further, local NWS storm spotter training sessions are available this spring—an excellent way to increase situational awareness and contribute to community safety.
As temperatures warm, so do club activities. Committee meetings for CAST and the Racing Committee take place in mid-March, and preparations for the season are well underway. With boats, facilities, and sailors gearing up, March sets the tone for a fun and successful sailing year.
Spring Cleanup and Club Work Days
On March 28, the club will host a Spring Cleanup focused on preparing both the boathouse and the small boat fleet. Additional work parties may be organized by shared boat captains, so keep an eye on the club message board for updates. These efforts ensure our facilities and boats are ready for a busy season ahead—and they’re a great way to connect with fellow members.
Commodore’s Cup 2025: Results Correction
An important correction was issued for the 2025 Commodore’s Cup results. After reviewing the scoring data, Dreadnought emerged as the winner with an average ranking of 1.36, narrowly edging out Capricious, which finished with 1.45 under the low-point scoring system.
Both boats demonstrated consistent and competitive performance throughout the series, and the close margin speaks to the high level of racing in the fleet. Congratulations to Dreadnought and her crew, and kudos to Capricious for a strong showing.
March Events to Mark on Your Calendar
Monthly Meeting & Potluck – March 21
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the arrival of spring at the Boathouse on Saturday, March 21 at 6:00 PM. Wear green, bring your favorite Irish or springtime dish, and enjoy an evening of food, conversation, and club updates.

Open Water Swim with TriOKC – March 7
The Road to Little Elm Open Water Swim Practice kicks off on March 7, with swimmers entering the water around 10:15 AM. Regular open water swim sessions will continue into April—stay tuned for dates.
Learn to Sail at Lake Thunderbird
Have you ever wanted to learn to sail—or know someone who has? The TSC Sailing School, a US Sailing–certified program located at Lake Thunderbird in Norman, offers beginner-friendly instruction on modern boats.
Youth & Adult Sailing Classes
Students learn essential skills such as rigging, launching, steering, sail handling, water safety, and teamwork. Classes are designed for those with little or no prior sailing experience and focus on building confidence while having fun on the water.
Become a US Sailing Level I Instructor
The club is also encouraging experienced sailors to consider becoming US Sailing Level I Instructors. This certification includes online and in-person training and supports the future of TSC’s sailing school and youth programs. Scholarships may be available through LTEF.
Racing Season Preview: 2026 Commodore’s Cup
The 2026 racing calendar is packed, with Wednesday evening races, Sunday afternoon events, Zest races, and free sail or make-up days scheduled from April through October. Highlights include:
- Race rules seminar on April 1
- First Commodore’s Cup race on April 15
- Earth Day sailing events in late April
- Full-moon free sails and summer evening races
Skippers are encouraged to attend the April rules and tactics seminar at the Boathouse and to volunteer for race duties throughout the season.
Earth Day Festival – April 26
Thunderbird Sailing Club will be an exhibitor at the City of Norman Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 26, from 12–5 PM at Reaves Park. Volunteers are needed to help promote sailing, distribute information, assist with kids’ activities, and showcase what makes our club special.
